DITA is a California-founded, Japan-crafted eyewear brand that has spent three decades building a reputation as one of the most seriously made frame labels in the world. Groovy Glasses stocks DITA in Christchurch because it represents exactly what we look for when we add a brand to our collection: genuine craft, a clear point of view and frames that hold their own as objects.

Founded in California, made in Japan

John Juniper and Jeff Solorio founded DITA in Laguna Beach, California in 1995. Both came from creative backgrounds in photography and film, and that origin shows in how the brand thinks about design: visually precise, drawn to specific cultural moments and the aesthetics of particular eras. From the beginning, DITA focused its production in Japan, working with artisan factories whose craftspeople have dedicated decades to eyewear and nothing else. DITA describes its position plainly as “a category of one.” It is not a fashion house licence producing eyewear on the side. Frames are the entire focus of the company, and every design and production resource goes into getting them right.

What it takes to make a DITA frame

Theo operates on the belief that glasses sit in the face, not in front of it. The frame should support the wearer’s personality rather than impose one. That philosophy has guided every collection since the beginning, and it is what separates T

A single DITA frame passes through hundreds of individual production steps and can take several months to complete. That figure reflects what the manufacturing standard actually requires, not a number chosen for effect. The craftspeople working in DITA’s Japanese factories have spent as many as 50 years in eyewear production, and the materials they work with are chosen for how they perform over time, not just how they look on day one.

The collections available at Groovy Glasses

Groovy Glasses holds a curated selection from the DITA range in-store. The collection spans bold sunglass series and refined optical frames, giving us options across a wide range of tastes and needs.

Flight Series

The Flight Series draws from post-war aviation design and the visual language of military aircraft from the 1970s. Built in titanium, the frames carry structured, muscular silhouettes that balance visual weight with light wear. These are among DITA’s most widely recognised sunglass models and a strong starting point for first-time DITA wearers.

Mach Series

The Mach Series takes its design cues from high-performance motorsport. Oversized lenses and bold frame construction give these sunglasses a pronounced presence. These frames are for wearers who want something that reads clearly and unapologetically.

Grandmaster Series

The Grandmaster is DITA’s most culturally embedded series. Its design draws from the swagger and visual language of late-1970s New York, with oversized titanium hardware and commanding proportions that have made it one of the brand’s most recognisable silhouettes. Limited editions appear within the series periodically. If you have seen DITA on a face and immediately known it, this is likely the frame you were looking at.

Statesman Series

The Statesman Series is DITA’s mid-century optical range, made in premium acetate and built for prescription wear and daily use. The collection draws from Hollywood’s Golden Age: classic browline and keyhole silhouettes with contemporary refinement. For those who want DITA’s craft standard in a frame they can wear full-time, the Statesman is the place to start.

Featherlight Series

The Featherlight Series sits at the understated end of DITA’s optical range. Lightweight construction and refined proportions make these frames suited to full-time prescription wearers who want quality without visual volume. These suit people who find the bolder DITA collections too much but still want a frame built to the same standard.
